When Did You Start Knitting?

When did you start knitting? Are you able to recall when you started knitting and who taught you?

I was taught to knit by my grandmother and my mother in the late 1970s. Having grown up in a colder climate on the South Island of New Zealand, I soon discovered how wonderful it could be to knit something that looked good and kept me warm at the same time.

When I first started working I quickly would put aside money to purchase enough wool. Sometimes putting it on layby at my local wool shop and only purchase it a ball at a time as needed.

I put my knitting on hold when I moved to Brisbane, Australia in the mid-’90s. I was having too much fun to devote much time to knitting.

During the past decade or so, I have only begun to take a passionate interest in my knitting. I have even learned new knitting techniques like knitting socks, to which I have become addicted. In turn, I started using circular needles after only ever knitting with straight needles previously. Circular needles weren’t available when I began knitting.

Additionally, I have discovered the wonderful world of Indie dyers out there. The internet has made it possible to purchase wool from all over the globe at the touch of a button.

Today, you can also obtain digital patterns online. Also, if you are unsure how to knit a particular technique, YouTube can be a great resource.

Hope you have fun remembering when you first started knitting. Like myself, I also hope that you continue to follow your knitting passion now and until the end of your days….
